House and the directions

Updated: May 25

Hi! Welcome to my blog.

Today I am going to talk about house and the directions.

House designs

Houses are designed with a cuboid body and a triangular prism roof.

Sometimes it can be a cylindrical body, but it is easier and cheaper to build a house in cuboid shape.

When a house is designed, the house will be partitioned or divided for the usage like a kitchen, living room, and bedroom.

Based on where these rooms are located, one side of the house will have more windows.

Some prefer having lots of windows in the living room, and others prefer a large window in the bedroom.

Depending on the desire, one side of the house might have many windows.

It means less insulation, so the house will be colder.

This is the reason why we have to find a passive way to warm up the house to save the heating cost.

If the builder was considerate of this factor, and follow the general rule of thumb to face the house to south direction, then the house will be warmed passively during the daytime.

South facing home and warmth

Houses facing the south are generally warmer, but the side of house facing the south should have more windows to let in the sunlight.

The reason why the south side of the house is warmer is because of sun path, also known as day arc.

Sun path, as the name suggest, is the path of the sun reference to ground reference point.

Due to the tilt of Earth, and elliptical rotation around the Sun by the Earth, different sun paths are created.

During the summer, the sun will move closer to the top of our head, of course the general movement of the sun will be from the east to west, but it is referring to north or south.

During the winter, the sun will move closer to the south.

This is the reason why the side of house with many windows should face the south side to allow more natural sunlight to warm up the house.

If there are equal numbers of windows on every side of the house, then choose the side you want to be warmed during the daytime.

For example, if you generally want the master bedroom to be warm, then have the master bedroom side of the house face the south.

If you want the master bedroom to be cool, then have the master bedroom side of the house face the north.

This also means yourself is exposed to the sunlight, even if you are staying home.

A well-designed house does not only keep the heating costs low by utilizing sunlight, but makes you healthy, maximizing utilization of natural resources.

Here are resources, commercial website and educational website, to help you understand more about the sun path.

Not all houses were designed equally, but next time when you are purchasing a new home, you can consider if the house is facing the south.

These are informational purpose and should not be treated as legal, medical, or professional advices. Please ask your medical doctors or local experts about their advices.
